For over thirty years Mike Davies, the author of this book,
Essex and Suffolk Boatyards & Boat Builders, worked as a Yacht Broker around the East Coast, calling on all the boatyards,
boat builders and marinas in the area.
Over the years he noticed that many of the traditional yards and boat builders were closing down, partly due to the economic climates and partly due to the advent of new materials appearing.
He had been collecting facts and figures on a large number of the boatyards, boat builders and yachts they had built and decided to record as much as he could before it was lost.
Thus this book was written, not only recording these facts and figures but also
including some information on the boatyards and boat builders
who had already disappeared.
It covers an area from Southwold in Suffolk
to Canvey Island in Essex. Each river is taken in order, the Ore
& Alde, Deben, Harwich Harbour, Stour, Orwell, Walton
Backwaters, Colne, Blackwater, Roach & Crouch and ending on
Canvey Island in Essex. Other inland boat builders are also
documented.
The
Boatyards, Boat Builders and Marinas are documented with
location photographs, letterheads, a selection of some of the boats they built
and comments on when they started, changed hands and ceased
trading (where known). |
